Pub of the Month November

Each month, Tewkesbury CAMRA will recommend to you a pub in our area which we think is worth a visit.

We will try and tell you which real ales they have on offer and link you to their own website if they have one!

This Month, we are recommending - The Royal Hop Pole, 94 Church Street Tewkesbury Gloucestershire GL20 5RS

About the Pub

This well known landmark is an amalgamation of historic buildings from the 15th and 18th centuries. It has been known as the Royal Hop Pole since a visit in September 1891 from Princess Mary of Teck (Queen Mary Royal Consort of George V). The pub is mentioned in Pickwick Papers. It was purchased by J.D. Wetherspoon and opened in May 2008. Wood panelling on almost every wall of the very spacious, multi-roomed drinking establishment with large patio and garden area at the rear.

Historic Interest

Seen from the front, the building is in three parts: the central section has an ornate portico, dating from 1921, having replaced a wide gateway leading to the yard and stables at the rear. Above the portico is the royal coat of arms of Princess Mary of Teck, later Queen Mary, royal consort to George V. The hotel was given permission to display the royal arms after the princess’s 1891 visit, since when it has been called The Royal Hop Pole.
